STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. Students studying in a STEM-designated program can apply for Optional Practical Training (OPT), allowing them to work for 12 months in the US after completing the degree program. The STEM designation of the MTU Health Informatics program makes students eligible for an additional 24-month STEM OPT extension. With up to 36 months more time to work and network in the US, international students can build valuable professional skills and contacts to help them with their career endeavors.

Niche.com ranks Michigan Tech as the safest public college campus in Michigan. Friendly and welcoming, Houghton's historic downtown features locally owned shops, eateries, museums, restaurants, and shopping.
